Why an independent damp survey?

To fix damp you first need to find where the moisture is coming from. RICS advises asking for an inspection that follows the 2022 Joint Position Statement (JPS), which gives an unbiased opinion from someone without a commercial interest in selling you a product, and only suggests remedial works that are proportionate (RICS).

  • "Rising damp" is often misdiagnosed, and failure of an original damp-proof course is extremely rare (RICS).
  • Condensation is the most common cause of damp in homes (GOV.UK).
  • Be wary of anyone who diagnoses damp with only a damp meter, especially on masonry walls and solid floors (RICS).

Typical cost

Damp surveys typically cost £150–£500, depending on property size and how detailed the survey is (MyBuilder). See the cost guide.
